![]() Chapter: Volume 3, Chapter 4 Species of pet featured: Teddy Bear
When D and Leon arrive at the house of the ladies, they find a zoo of teddy bears in her room. While Leon is suitably freaked out, D manages to pick 'Pappy' out of around a thousand teddy bears, claiming he knew because of the tag in its ear. Count D and the woman have a pleasant conversation about brands of teddy bears, while the family looks on in awe, not having suspected their grandmother to be able to have a normal conversation. After plans have been made to visit the woman and Pappy again (as it seems to be good for the woman's memory), Count D leaves again.
Back in the petshop, Count D searches for the contract his grandfather made for the woman. It turns out that the contract was signed by Rosemary's, the woman, father, who wished for a pet to keep her safe for the rest of her life as the war was approaching. Soon enough, Rosemary is remembering in chronological order once more, and is definitely improving. Count D is not sure whether it's a positive thing, as memories usually fade for a reason, so she might have been happier if her memories had just stayed forgotten. The grandchild, Cindy, thinks that without the memories, her grandmother wouldn't be her grandmother anymore, as they're part of who she is. ![]() Suddenly, Rosemary asks Cindy who she is, and tells her that she couldn't have a grandchild, as she's not even married yet. She is falling back into her memories, until she recollects the time she first got Pappy. ![]() While bombs are going off around her, Rosemary hugs Pappy close. Suddenly, a bomb strikes near the two, and piles of rubble land atop of Pappy, while Rosemary miraculously survives. Pappy saved her, and suddenly, Count D (the grandfather) comes up to her, and informs Rosemary that the bear was a gift from her father, and that Pappy is her family now.
Meanwhile, Rosemary is stuck into her memory of Pappy, and believes she is 12 years old. Count D and Leon join Cindy and Rosemary on a trip through the park, when they find out that someone blew up the temple. Leon holds the perpetrators under gunpoint, but one of them panicks and shoots at the civilians instead. Pappy gets hit with the bullet. The criminals are arrested, but not before claiming that fascism will live on. This panicks Rosemary.
Later that night, D has mended Pappy, but Cindy informs him that this shock might've been too great for Rosemary's system. Rosemary, meanwhile, is remembering her father. Her father informs her that she must never let the 'devils' find her. Her real name was Elisabeth, but she was forced to hide her religion, name and history, as she would've been killed for being a Jew otherwise. Rosemary mourns that she'd lost everything, but Pappy informs her that it was really her father who lost it all, making a contract with 'the devil' (Grandfather D) for a protector for Rosemary. ![]() Count D tells her that the contract has been fulfilled. A sewn-in Bible protected Rosemary from the bullets, and a picture put inside reminds Rosemary that her real name is Elisabeth Schneider, her real jewish self. Rosemary dies as Count D makes Pappy vanish. ![]() » B a c k
